clay is possibility and potential,
becoming something beautiful or functional,
starting with an idea and becoming something that will stand the test of time.

gulf waters
Pottery orders have been keeping me busy for the last 6 weeks or so, giving me no spare time to weave. After the holiday hubbub, it's been nice to slow down a bit and take my time over a new piece. This one was inspired by a recent trip to the gulf coast and time...
fool’s paradise
All that gliters is not gold, right? Even so, we like glittery things - they grab our attention and make us pursue them, hoping for gold. This piece is about that search, navigating past obstacles, avoiding distractions and zeroing in on the goal as it comes in sight....
seaweed wave
Not long ago I saw a photograph in a listicle of supposedly creepy things that showed a sunlit wave that was filled with long seaweed leaves. I suppose the author of the article thought that it looked unearthly and monstrous, but I was fascinated, enchanted by this...
watching collection
A while back I envisioned a collection of eyes grouped on a wall so that it appeared that the wall was looking back at the viewer. The idea of it puts a smile on my face and a twinkle in my eye. The first grey piece in that collection, called Watching, is...
tree rings
I love how you can look at the rings of a tree and be transported back in time. Ring by ring you can count backwards and think about what what happening in the world when it was created, vicariously experiencing the memories of the tree. Near to where I grew up there...
the pond
A garden pond is a green place, lush with plants and cool deep water. I know one that is edged with Japanese maple trees and water plants and stocked with goldfish, where I can happily wile away summer hours watching the fish chase eachother, listening to the sounds...
meet kathryn
Pottery allows me to put something of myself out into the world. As an introvert, I find this is the best way of expressing myself. I’ve been inspired greatly by my parents, both creative in their own ways. I was constantly encouraged to share my creativity with others.
Artist, artisan, handcrafter, craftsman, each word evokes a different sentiment and a different feeling. Quality differences, intentional differences, interpretational differences. I’m not sure I would consider myself an artist. I’m not a crafter either. I’m a potter. However, now that I’m including other materials, even potter feels limiting. When you see yourself differently, you act, think and behave differently.
It’s a compulsion for me at this point. I have ideas – many ideas – and I am driven to make each of them a reality.
